Digital teaching-learning scenarios for accident prevention in school sports - a prevention project for the development of PE teacher training

Aims:

This collaborative research project "Digital teaching-learning scenarios for accident prevention in school sports - a prevention project for the development of PE teacher training" is divided to two partial projects:

  • A: pedagogical-didactic sub-project
  • B: health psychological sub-project

The majority of the 1.3 million school accidents registered annually by the statutory accident insurance providers occur in the school environment in general and in school sports (physical education / extracurricular physical education) in particular. With over 500,000 registered and compensated cases, school accidents are at a high level. In accordance with Section 1 of Book VII of the Social Code, it is the task of the statutory accident insurance funds in this context to use all suitable means to prevent work-related accidents and occupational diseases as well as work-related health hazards. Thus, the focus is on the qualification of sports teachers within the framework of their initial, further and continuing education.

Various findings throughout Germany point to deficits in the training and further education structure of sports teachers, especially forms of further and advanced training that contribute to securing and expanding the professional knowledge of sports teachers. According to the KMK position, emphasizing that safe school sports has to be carried out by qualified sports teachers, a technology-supported teaching-learning environment is to be developed, which should be used as an instrument for school sports-related accident prevention in the initial, further and continuing education of sports teachers. For this purpose, the nationwide empirical findings on pupil accidents in school sports (with differences between school types, gender, regions, age cohorts, etc.) as well as the already existing materials and strategies for accident prevention at school and the pedagogical-didactic as well as health-psychological expertise of the applicants will be taken into account.

The basis of the project is the research hypothesis that a technology-supported teaching-learning environment will provide more accident-prevention and safety-related skills to the teaching staff than before.

Activities/Methods:

The procedure follows an integrative-interdisciplinary approach, which is characterized by a mixed-method design. As part of a document analysis, the content catalogues of all universities are to be examined with regard to the regulations of the accident insurance institutions that are involved in the training of sports teachers. Based on this, the content of the analyzed educational offers (taking human-centered procedural models into account) should be digitally processed (including video vignettes / video layouts) and integrated into a web-based self-learning course that has yet to be designed (taking into account the state specifics with regard to learning management systems). The course focuses on accident prevention in school sports and is linked to appropriate evaluation heuristics to ensure sustainability and to guarantee the transfer to teacher training. This process is accompanied by a formative evaluation.

On the basis of a context-adapted transfer strategy (following stakeholder consultations in the federal states) and the results of the formative evaluation, it is to be expected within the framework of the transfer catalysis that safety-related competences will be acquired and consolidated by sports teachers to a greater extent than before. The web-based self-study course makes a significant contribution to this, which is achieved through the use of evaluation heuristics "from below", i.e. involving the relevant actors at an early stage, forming a valuable and sustainable prevention approach. However, the web-based self-study course does not suspend the existing teaching aids and brochures, information media and handouts, but increases their effectiveness through user-oriented integration and synthesis.
